Your customer is the hero: StoryBrand-style messaging for service businesses

The fastest way to make your website clearer is to stop making your business the main character.

Your customer is the hero: StoryBrand-style messaging for service businesses

One of the biggest shifts in how I think about websites came from Donald Miller's StoryBrand framework. The core idea is simple: your customer is the hero of the story, and your business is the guide.

Most service websites get this backwards. They open with the company's history, awards, and capabilities. That information matters, but it isn't what a prospect is looking for first.

Start with the problem

People pay attention to stories about problems they recognize. Before you talk about your services, name the frustration your clients are dealing with. An accounting firm might lead with the stress of messy books at tax time. An engineering firm might lead with projects that stall because of unclear requirements.

Position yourself as the guide

A good guide shows two things: empathy and authority. Empathy says, "I understand what you're dealing with." Authority says, "I've helped people solve this before." Testimonials, case studies, and a clear process all build that authority without bragging.

Give them a plan

A simple three-step process makes working with you feel easy and low-risk. For example: book a call, get a plan, start the work. When people can picture the path, they're more likely to take the first step.

Show what success looks like

Describe the outcome your clients want, in their words. Not "comprehensive solutions," but "books you can trust" or "projects that stay on schedule." That picture of success is what motivates action.

A clear story makes design decisions easier, too. It's the filter I use to decide which web design trends are worth borrowing.

You don't need to rewrite your whole site at once. Start with the homepage and one service page, and make your customer the hero of both. (When you're ready to carry the story further, here's how website storytelling works across every page.)
